A trip to New Zealand wouldn’t be complete without
a visit to the Shire, especially if you are a fan of the Lord of the Rings and
The Hobbit movies directed by Sir Peter Jackson.
The Shire, or Hobbiton as it is known, sits very
near the town of Matamata. The rolling countryside
dotted with trees and grazing sheep made an ideal location for the home of the
Hobbits. After filming The Fellowship of
the Ring, even though most of the set was removed, they kept the hobbit holes
in tact. And for the making of the latest
movie, “The Hobbit” they added more
hobbit holes as well as a full sized Green Dragon Tavern to the site.
We recently watched the extended version of the
Lord of the Rings together with the documentary on the making of the
trilogy. I think being able to see first hand the level and detail and work that went into creating the set made a visit to
Hobbiton even more interesting. We were just a little disappointed that we didn’t bump into Frodo, Sam, Bilbo or our
two favorite hobbits, Merry and Pippin.
It truly felt as if we were walking through a small town, especially as we
ended the tour at the Green Dragon enjoying a wee pint of ale.
