A short drive from Santa Marta takes you to the mountains and an altitude of about 650 meters. The air is cooler and the vegetation becomes dense. There is an abundance of flora here. They have much more rain than near the coast even though it is only a short distance a way. Santa Marta has not had rain for three months but up here in Minca it rains almost every day for a short time. We saw banana trees, mango, papaya, avacado, cilantro, ginger and coffee plants.

Minca is known for its organic coffee plantations. Well, plantations is a bit of an exaggeration since we only really saw coffee plants scattered here and there amongst the vegetation. Or perhaps our tour guide just didn't take us on the 'big' tour.
A view down the mountain to Santa Marta.
And here you have some photos of the flora and fauna. Minca is also well known for the variety of birds, but those are very hard to photograph. I prefer flowers as they stay still long enough for me to get a decent picture.
